How to Make a Great Impression in a Job Interview

If you’ve made it past the job-hunting stage and have now landed an interview with a potential employer, you want to make sure that you are presenting yourself in the best manner possible. Remember in today’s job market, there is a lot of competition and you need to be on you’re A game.

In my current job position I have had the opportunity to interview and hire potential employees. I want to let you in on some helpful information that employers are taking note of when they interview you.

  • Overall Presentation An employer will make their first impression within the first few seconds of meeting you. It is crucial to be well put together for a job interview. Employers want to hire someone who fits the part of the job, make sure that you appear neat and clean. Dress for the job, but don’t over do it. Keep your outfit professional, but simple. Keep jewelry, makeup, perfume or cologne minimal.
  • Confidence Employers are looking for someone who they feel can adequately fill their job requirements. It is key for you to express yourself in a confident manner. Please note that there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance that you do not want to cross. Let the interviewer know why you would be perfect for their job. Tell them of any special training or expertise that you have.
  • Manners Once the interview is over be sure to thank the person interviewing you for their time and consideration. If you have their email address send them a short email thanking them for the interview. If you don’t have their email you can send a letter or card in the mail. Keep it short; just thank them for their time and the opportunity. If you don’t end up getting the job this time, you may be remembered by your thoughtful thank you note, and be asked to come back for the next job opening.

By following these three simple ideas an employer will take notice of you and you will be in the running for a job. If you don’t get the job the first go around, don’t take it personally, there is a lot of competition out there. Keep your head up and keep on keeping on.

Can’t Find a Job?

It’s no secret that jobs opportunities in Highland County are scarce. The job openings that we see lately have extremely specific requirements that only a select few qualify for. As I search for jobs to post, I have come to realize that right now you will not find an abundance of job opportunities in Highland County. If you are currently unemployed and have had no luck on the job hunt, it may be time to reevaluate your options.

Further your education. If you are currently receiving unemployment compensation or just unemployed, you will most likely qualify for a government grant to go back to school. Government grants can completely pay for your college education. If you go to Southern State and take up to 12 credit hours, depending on the classes you take, you will pay very little, nothing, or even get money back after the quarter is over. You may also qualify for loans to aid you through your education, I highly suggest sticking with government grants seeing as you don’t have to repay these. You can fill out a Fasfa online or at a college campus and this will let you know how much grant money you qualify for.

Furthering your education may put you in a position to land a good job after you earn your degree. It may also be a good idea to research careers that will be in high demand over the next several years. Hopefully, by the time you earn a degree the job market will be stabilized.

Think outside the box. If you can’t find a job and need cash now you may need to let your creative juices flow. What type of skills do you currently possess that could potentially earn you money? You could baby-sit, walk dogs, clean houses, have a yard sale, or sell some of your possessions online. Don’t count these things out, they may not make you rich but they will earn you money that you need. Do what you need to do to hold yourself over until you find another job.
